The officer began to interrogate the witnesses.
Commonsense questioning tells us that the police officer would be questioning the witnesses. Interrogate means "question."
Elizabeth refuted the accusations, giving evidence that they were untrue.
Showing that the accusations were untrue was Elizabeth's way of responding to them. Refute means "demonstrates the falsity of a statement."
