8.4. Future Directions
Work is underway in the OASIS UDDI TC on the next version of the UDDI specification. This section describes some of the major topics being considered at the time of writing.
8.4.1. Standardization of Taxonomy Language
Although most UDDI implementations support user-defined taxonomies, no standard syntax is currently available to represent the taxonomy in a way that multiple implementations can read it.The current proposal being worked on in the OASIS UDDI TC is to support OWL [OWL] as the standard exchange syntax for taxonomies. In addition to providing a standard syntax for taxonomies designed specifically for UDDI, this approach allows emerging OWL tools to be used to develop taxonomies for UDDI. It also allows OWL ontologies to be produced without UDDI in mind for the purpose of UDDI taxonomies, although not all of the information in the OWL ontology will be reflected in the UDDI taxonomy.
8.4.2. Semantic Searching
UDDI searching based on semantics has attracted much attention. Most of the approaches developed to date have implemented the semantics either alongside UDDI or in a wrapper around UDDI, requiring each solution to invent its own nonstandard programming model. The OASIS UDDI TC is working on integrating some level of support into UDDI so that tools and applications can use the standard UDDI programming model.
8.4.3. Instance-Based Security
Currently, authorization in UDDI is limited to the individual APIs, such as the Publish API. Work has begun to extend the UDDI authorization support to individual entities within a UDDI registry. |
