SANS Overview
The SANS Institute was established in 1989 as a cooperative research and education organization. SysAdmin, Audit, Network, and Security (SANS) is by far the largest source for information on security training and certification in the world. It operates the Internet's early warning system, the Internet Storm Centera free service to the Internet community. The Internet Storm Center gathers more than 3 million intrusion-detection log entries every day. Its goal is to find new Internet storms as quickly as possible, to isolate the sites that are used in the attack, and to provide authoritative data about the attack. According to the SANS Institute website (http://www.sans.org/aboutsans.php), SANS now has "more than 1.65 million security professionals, auditors, system administrators, network administrators, chief information officers who share the lessons they are learning and jointly find solutions to the challenges they face." Many SANS resources, such as the weekly vulnerability digest, the weekly news digest, and more than 1,200 original research papers, are free to all who ask.
