For television, I have a TiVo; for the Internet and my Mac mini, I have Audio Hijack Pro, which allows me to record and schedule the recording of anything my Mac mini can hear. It also records from iTunes, which is a plus for iPod users.

The program records to a variety of formats and includes plug-ins to improve the quality of your recordings. It's a good choice for converting vinyl or cassette music to a digital format.

The figure shows the program recording an audio stream from RealPlayer, also shown.

Why I like it: I like this utility because I can't always be sitting at the computer when an interesting program is on. But it has plenty of other uses as well.
