NN-XT Patch Anatomy

The easiest way to explain NN-XT patches is to show you what they can do. Let's load a piano patch in the NN-XT and compare it to the NN-19's GRANDPIANO patch.

To examine an NN-XT patch

1.

Using the NN-XT patch browser, load NN-XT Sampler Patches/Piano/A Grand Piano.sxt (Figure 6.72).

2.

Open the Remote Editor to see the NN-XT sample map display (Figure 6.73).

3.

Click a sample box in the Remote Editor. Across the bottom of the sample map display, you'll see information about that sample (Figure 6.74).

Above the Lo Vel and Hi Vel knobs (Figure 6.75) is the velocity range at which this sample plays: from 1 to 52. This sample is only for very soft attacks.

4.

Use the scroll bar on the right to scroll down until you see another sample at the same keyboard location (Figure 6.76).

What may look like a whole separate patch is a second set of samples sharing the same key mapping.

5.

Click the newly visible sample to see its velocity range information (Figure 6.77). With Lo Vel at 53 and Hi Vel at 89, this sample is for medium attacks.

6.

Scroll down farther and you'll see that there are two more sets of samples, one with a velocity range from 90 to 109 and another with a range from 110 to 127.

7.

Try playing the patch using your external keyboard, or input some notes with different velocities to hear how much more expressive this patch is than the NN-19 patch.
