In this chapter, you learned how the Oracle XDK and little-known yet powerful features such as AQ can create applications that solve real business problems. Even though XML started off as a document technology, its use for data exchange has rapidly become prevalent. The gateway application presented here is a very real one, as most business data is stored relationally and will continue to be stored in this manner in the future. It is not realistic in these economic times to have businesses totally rewrite their applications or database schemas in order to do business on the Internet. This approach satisfies both the preservation and expansion requirements and should be seriously considered when designing Internet applications.
