Summary
In this chapter you had the chance to build an application that was truly XML-powered, using the new Oracle XML Pipeline Processor. The example application was multimodal in that its logic was implemented with a combination of compiled and declarative code. While this can initially appear foreign to developers, it is not much different than JSPs, XSQL pages, ASP pages, etc. With development and support costs going up, the ability to create stable, bug-free components that can be assembled in a declarative way can yield significant efficiencies, thereby reducing time to deployment and increasing the bottom line. A particularly apt comparison is to the electronics industry at the time when the switch was made from discrete components to integrated circuits, which not only lowered costs but improved reliability.
