Chapter 6. Implementing and Conducting Administration of Resources

Objectives

This chapter helps you to prepare for the exam by covering the following Microsoft-specified objectives for the Implementing and Conducting Administration of Resources section of the Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows XP Professional exam:

Connect to local and network print devices.

Manage printers and print jobs.

Control access to printers by using permissions.

Connect to an Internet printer.

Connect to a local print device.

Printers are a vital segment of any computer network and pose one of the greatest sources of day-to-day problems for desktop and systems administrators. These objectives measure your ability to install, configure, and monitor local and network printers and your ability to troubleshoot common printing problems.

Configure and manage file systems.

Convert from one file system to another file system.

Configure NTFS, FAT32, or FAT file systems.

Windows XP Professional supports three different file systems, each with different capabilities. You need to be knowledgeable about each of these file systems, the advantages and disadvantages of each, when to use them, and how to configure them.

Manage and troubleshoot access to and synchronization of offline files.

Mobile users need access to files and folders stored on computers in different locations on the network, whether or not they are connected to the network. Microsoft includes this objective to test your ability to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot the Offline Files feature of Windows XP Professional.

Chapter Summary

Apply Your Knowledge

Study Strategies

You should practice the skills involved in the Step by Step and Apply Your Knowledge exercises until you are familiar with the concepts of printing, file systems, and offline file access.

Install and configure printers in each of the different configurations presented in this chapter. You can install various printers without the need for actual physical print devices being present, and thereby gain proficiency in the required procedures. Pay particular attention to problems that prevent users from printing across the network, especially situations that prevent a single user from accessing a printer.

Install a second hard drive on a Windows XP Professional computer and configure partitions on this drive that are formatted with the FAT, FAT32, and NTFS file systems. Practice converting between different file systems as well as configuring volume properties, mount points, and disk quotas.

On a network of two Windows XP Professional computers, configure a shared folder containing several test files. Configure the computers for offline files and practice accessing the files across the network. Modify the files and note the results. Try synchronizing the files and deleting them from the offline files cache and note the results of various actions.
