X Window System Configuration: redhat-config-xfree86

If you have trouble with your X Window System configuration, you can use redhat-config- xfree86 to configure it again. This tool is also helpful for updating your X Window System if you change your video card. Simply run the tool again and select the appropriate card. You can run redhat-config-xfree86 by selecting Display on the System Settings window or menu. The redhat-config-xfree86 tool first opens a Display Settings window (shown in Figure 4-4) with pop-up menus for selecting your resolution and color depth.

Your current settings will already be selected, along with the monitor and video card information. To change your monitor or video card settings, click Advanced. This opens a window with tabbed panels, one for Monitor, another for Video Card, and yet another for Multi-Head (for video cards supporting multiple monitors). The Video Card panel will list supported video cards, with your current one selected. Here you can also manually select your video memory. The Monitor panel lists supported monitors, with boxes for manually entering the horizontal and vertical frequencies. The redhat-config-xfree86 tool then generates an X Window System configuration file called /etc/X11/XF86Config. This is the file the X Window System uses to start up. A backup is created in /etc/X11/XF86Config.backup.
