Summary

We have discussed in this chapter several important considerations prior to installing Linux on your system. Among these considerations are partition placement, RAID support, and file system selection. We then looked at two key configurable kernel features that are now available in the 2.6 kernel: I/O elevators and huge TLB page support. These features can be set or selected during installation or bootup time and may impact some large I/O-intensive applications. We also discussed the powerful, yet simple, Linux logging facility. Finally, we took a look at Linux system initialization and the two different initialization styles that have been adopted by various Linux distributions.
