  • Chapter 9. HOSTING A WEB SERVER

Since its introduction in 1993, the World Wide Web has become a great tool for spreading information, rumors, and entertainment. Nearly 70 percent of the systems hosting the Web are running Apache, according to the Netcraft Web Server Survey, a monthly survey of the Web servers running on systems connected to the Internet.

Not bad for a piece of free, open-source software that many people think was named Apache because it's "a patchy" Web server.

Apache grew out of an older, mostly abandoned Web server (the National Center for Supercomputing Applications' HTTPd) early in 1995 and has become the standard for speed, reliability, and flexibility in Web servers.

In this chapter, we'll look at installing and configuring the latest Apache server to add our own data to the World Wide Web or to a local Intranet.
