Chapter 3: Updating and Upgrading Fedora

Overview

One of the most overlooked aspects of running a Linux system is keeping it up to date. Keeping a system up to date involves installing new versions of the software on your system. This can seem like a daunting task, given the huge amount of software included with Fedora Core. Luckily, there are automated updating systems both included with Fedora Core and available for Fedora Core as a third-party add-on.

Another process that needs attention is upgrading of your existing Red Hat Linux to Fedora Core. This process involves obtaining the installation media, performing the upgrade, and verifying your software.

Sometimes upgrading a system is more of a challenge than you want to handle, or maybe you've just gotten too comfortable with your current version to change to a new one. This chapter provides some information that helps you keep your legacy Red Hat Linux system running strong.
