Maximizing the Log Service

After Contribute is fully integrated into an organization, you'll want a way to see how it's being used. CPS includes a Log service as a key component. The Log service maintains an ongoing record of all Contribute activities, complete with key data such as when a Contribute-related event occurred, which files were affected, and which personnel were involved.

CPS includes a Log Viewer application that displays the data in a highly readable, completely sortable format in a browser window. The Log Viewer output can be printed, or the entire log can be saved as a comma-separated value file (CSV). Numerous programsincluding spreadsheets and databasescan open CSV files and manipulate the data within. As you'll see in this lesson, you can even import such a file into Dreamweaver for display as structured data in a table.

1.

In Contribute, choose Edit > Administer Websites > DesignDeploy. When the Administer Website dialog box opens, switch to the Publishing Services category and click the Publishing Services Console link. Enter the password defined during installationdesigndeployand click Log In when the login screen appears in your system browser.

You could, of course, launch the Publishing Services Console from the standard Start button (Start > All Programs > Macromedia > Macromedia Contribute Publishing Services > Administer Contribute Publishing Services). You could get the same result by entering a URL in your browser's location field (https://yourComputerName:8900/contribute/admin/server.cfm).

2.

In the browser window displaying the Contribute Publishing Services console, switch to the Website Settings category. Click View Log. After the Log Viewer Web application executes, the results are displayed in a new browser window.

Initially, the log displays all the data currently stored; however, there are a number of controls available for sorting and limiting the data displayed. The Show drop-down list offers quite a variety of options for filtering the log information. Additionally, each of the column headers acts as a sorting mechanism. Let's present and print a view displaying all the entries concerning documents sent for review, sorted from the oldest to the newest.

3.

From the Show list, choose Send for Review; the list is automatically filtered to display just those entries with Send for Review events. Click the Date/Time link to reverse the sort order. Press Ctrl+P (Command+P) to send the page to the printer.
