Summary

In this chapter we explored a number of undocumented SQL Server features, including undocumented stored procedures, trace flags, DBCC command verbs, and functions. Use these at your own risk. They aren't documented for a reasonchiefly, because Microsoft doesn't want you to use them. If you decide to use them anyway, do so with care and with the expectation that they will likely change in a future version of SQL Server. Also, don't expect any support from Microsoft. From the vendor's perspective, that's the whole idea of not documenting something: You don't have to support it and you can change it as you please. Using the undocumented features of any productSQL Server or any otheris generally unadvisable. You shouldn't do it unless there's no other way to get the functionality you need. I've covered undocumented features in this book because I want you to understand how SQL Server works behind the scenes. Understanding SQL Server's internal workings is key to writing Transact-SQL that is efficient, robust, extensible, and fast.
