Close the Door

Ideally, your work environment should be a place with a door that you can close to eliminate disturbance. If this isn't possible, at least shoot for your own office. If you work at home, your office should be a room away from the rest of the family, a place where they know you're working. If you work away from home, try to snag your own office, and, failing that, shoot for a quiet corner cube or other place removed from the typical noise and traffic flow in the office. Some people have found that headphones go a long way toward blocking ambient noise. Do whatever it takes to cut down on distractions and interruptions, and focus on your job. I've even been known to unplug my phone when I'm working on something very complex. That's what voice mail is for. Your employer would probably agree that what they pay you to do is more important than most of the phone calls you receive.

Personally, I've found it useful to lay down a few basic ground rules about the home office. When I'm in the office, if the door is shut, I've asked my family to assume that this means that I don't want to be disturbed. If the door is open, they can assume that I'm not doing anything requiring great concentration and can come in whenever they feel like it. I try to leave the door open as often as I can; I only close it when absolutely necessary. It's common for my kids to join me in the office when I'm working with the door open, something I actually look forward to. Truth be told, people usually don't want to interrupt others who are trying to think hard. The trick is in letting them know exactly when that is.
