Summary

Red Hat Linux comes with many applications and utilities. This chapter describes some of these applications, including common office tools—spreadsheet, calendars, calculators, and email programs—as well as graphics and imaging programs, such as the GIMP and KGhostview.

By reading this chapter, you learned the following:

  • The companion CD-ROMs include a variety of applications and utilities. Many of these applications are installed when you install Red Hat Linux from the companion CD-ROMs, following the steps outlined in Chapter 2. You have to install some of the applications manually from the CD-ROMs.

  • Ximiam Evolution is a personal information manager that you can use to read and send email, manage your calendar, and keep track of your contact information.

  • Red Hat Linux comes with the OpenOffice.org office suite—a Microsoft Office-like suite of office applications that includes among other components, the Writer word processor, Calc spreadsheet, and Impress presentation software.

  • The GIMP, Ghostscript, and KGhostview are useful for working with image files of various formats. In particular, the GIMP is image-processing software with capabilities on a par with commercial packages, such as Adobe Photoshop and Corel Photopaint. KGhostview is ideal for viewing and printing PostScript and PDF documents.

  • There are several commercially available office application suites for Linux —Applixware Office, and StarOffice. These commercial applications are not part of Red Hat Linux, but you can find out more about each product in case you need a Linux office suite for your home or business.

  • CrossOverOffice from CodeWeavers is a unique commercial application that enables you to run Microsoft Office 97 and 2000 applications in GNOME or KDE.
