Chapter 20: ASP Web Applications
Overview
Chapter 19, “Building Windows Applications with the Report Designer Component,” we showed you how to use the RDC in a Windows application; now we are going to discuss how to use the RDC in an ASP application. Setting up an ASP application is little more work; fortunately, once it is done you can reuse your code. As we explained in Chapter 17, “The Crystal Programming Forest,” there are many ways to do the same thing. In this chapter we are going to focus on the RDC, and we will cover the Remote Application Server (RAS) in Chapter 24, “Report Application Server.”
Business Question: I need to develop a web-based reporting system that serves up data dynamically and in a manner that’s easy to use. What’s the best way to do that?
The main benefit of a web-reporting solution is that you skip all of the installation hassles of software on end-user machines. The Crystal viewer of your choice is delivered automatically from the web server into the end user’s Internet cache and becomes available for all the reports that the user views.
