Two Main Technologies

With Crystal Reports 9, there are two main technologies to focus on when considering web reporting. The first of these technologies is called the Report Design Component, or RDC. The RDC comprises a complete, web-ready COM wrapper around the Crystal reporting engine and allows for full control over the loading and displaying of reports. New features in Crystal 9 make the RDC even more powerful and easy to use.

A handy reference to the RDC can be found in the file TechRef.pdf, located in the DOCS folder of your Crystal CD, or in C:\Program Files\Crystal Decisions\Crystal Reports 9\Developer Files\Help\en\ CrystalDevHelp.chm.

The second technology available to you for web reporting is called the Report Application Server, or RAS. This technology is brand new to Crystal Reports version 9. It is a COM (and/or Java) technology designed explicitly for the Web. RAS can be used to customize the standard web viewers to the point where they can exist on web pages with other information, so, for example, a chart could be displayed in the corner of a web page from a Crystal report. You can learn more about RAS in Chapter 24.

An explanation providing a nice overview of the two technologies can be found in the file DevGuide.pdf, located DOCS folder of your Crystal CD.

Note

The PDF files in the DOCS folder are not copied to your hard drive during the installation, so you’ll need to go back to your Crystal CD to find these handy guides.
