how should our manners be with our parents?

a young man came to imam ja'far al-sadiq (a.s) and asked, "o, grandson of the holy prophet, i have an old father who needs help even in eating and i must help him".

the imam said, "you are lucky and fortunate for being so kind to your father. you must do all that you can do to help your father. you must personally help him wash his clothes, hands, face, help him shower, feed him, respect him, sit with him. when you are free, to talk to him to comfort him and listen to him carefully.

you must never disrespect him, speak to him harshly or disappoint him.

during your childhood, he has endured a great deal difficulties and hardships and now it is your responsibility to help and serve him.

you must thank allah for his giving you the ability and power to work for him and for such work of kindness to your parents you might receive kind attention and salvation from allah.

you must remember allah's commands about parents that says, "you must not worship any one else besides allah and be kind to your parents".
