imam hassan the second imam
imam hassan was the oldest son of imam ali. he was very learned, just, and
hard working. after imam ali, he became the second imam, and the leader of
the muslims.
imam hassan was a man of great kindness and noble character. he even showed
kindness and friendliness to his enemies. during the time when both imam
hassan and his father were alive, there was a man who wanted to become the
leader of all the muslims. for this reason he used to say bad things about
imam ali and his family. his name was moawia.
one day one of the followers of moawia saw imam hassan in madina. he went
over to the imam and purposely did not say, salam alaikum' to him but spoke
many bad words to him.
immediately the followers of imam hassan wanted to punish him, but imam hassan
told them to leave him alone. he himself then faced the man, said 'salam
alaikum' to him, asked how he was, spoke to him in a kind manner and invited
him over to his house.
when the man saw the way imam hassan treated him and how kind he was to him,
he became ashamed of himself. he realized that what moawia had said about
imam hassan and imam ali was not true at all.
when the man was about to leave madina he went to imam hassan and apologized
to him. after that whenever he heard any bad things about imam hassan and
imam ali, he would say that it was not true. he would tell people how kind,
generous and bright imam hassan was.
