the third imam
imam hussayn(a.s) was the younger brother of imam hassan, who, like his father
and older brother, was a very learned and hard working person.
he was a very brave and strong man. he often fought against evildoers. during
his time there was a sinful man by the name of yazid who considered himself
as the successor of the prophet and leader of the muslims.
since yazid was an unjust and cruel man who often tricked the people, imam
hussayn would not follow his laws and accept him as a leader.
the people in the town of kufa asked imam hussayn to come and help them.
before he could reach kufa, he met yazid's army in a place called karbala.
there a big battle took place between yazid's army and the small group of
imam hussayn followers. even though there were only seventy two people with
the imam, they fought a thousand of yazid's soldiers.
they fought with great courage and on the 10th of muharram they became martyrs,
(killed for the cause of god).
today, all shia muslims, all over the world hold meetings to commemorate
the martyrdom of imam hussayn. this day is called 'ashura'.
they bring to remembrance all the hardships and sufferings which imam hussayn
and his small group of followers went through.
