Who Should Read This Book?

The book is primarily addressed to software developers in industry and academia. I believe software practitioners will benefit from the discussion and analysis of the root causes of software project failures that I cover in this book. For students of software engineering at all levels, I believe this book offers a picture of the plurality and diversity of factors involved in software development outside of the technical "prescriptive and deterministic" view of software development typically covered in the software engineering and computer science curricula. I hope this will provide students with a broader perspective and appreciation of the complexity of the cofactors that are the bane of software development projects. I trust such exposure early in their professional training will better prepare such students for tackling software development projects in their careers. I believe that a comprehensive analysis of the variety of factors that contribute to successful software projects will permit professional software developers to appreciate more deeply the complexities of the task of software development and learn better how to handle these factors at different stages of the development process.

The secondary audience of the book comprises senior management and executives responsible for software development projects. Senior managers need to be aware of the nontechnical issues involved in managing software development and to recognize the role management can play in minimizing the risk of software development failures in their organizations.
