M MACMedia Access Control. In a WLAN network card, MAC is a radio controller protocol. It corresponds to the ISO network model's Layer 2 (data link layer). The IEEE 802.11 standard specifies the MAC protocol for medium sharing, packet formats and addressing, and error detection. MANmetropolitan-area network. Similar to a LAN, but typically over a larger area such as a city. MHzmegahertz. A unit of measure for frequency equal to one million cycles per second. MIBManagement Information Base. A collection of network operational information residing in a virtual store that may be accessed, typically through an SNMP-compliant system, for analysis. microwaveUsually refers to all radio frequencies above 2 GHz or so. mini-PCIminiature Peripheral Component Interconnect. A standard developed by Intel Corporation that defines a method to connect high-speed peripherals to a system. The WLAN radio inside the Cisco 1100 Series AP is a mini-PCI radio. modulateTo vary the amplitude, frequency, or phase of an RF wave in accordance with the information to be conveyed. modulationProcess by which the characteristics of electrical signals are transformed to represent information. multipath distortionCaused by the transmitted signal reaching the receiver via more than one path. A common cause is reflected signals bouncing off metal objects in a room. The reflected signal (having traveled farther) reaches the antenna at a slightly later time period, mixing with the original signal and causing interference. multipointA communications circuit interconnecting several nodes (usually more than two).
