IntroductionWLANs, as we know them today, were introduced as early as 1986 for use in barcode scanning. These often basic ad hoc systems were used for either temporary systems or very simplified "unwired" systems. As WLANs began to become more popular, a need arose for some type of installation guidelines. However, every installation was unique, and a cookie cutter design guide was difficult to write.To provide a good, stable installation for a WLAN, most sites require an independent evaluation. This book addresses how to perform this evaluation, or survey, of a site. It also provides guidelines for selecting the technology and products to meet the requirements of the desired applications. As you will learn in this book, however, the heart of a good installation is an understanding of the tools and methods that can be used to determine optimal installation locations for the WLAN products. |
