Chapter 7. Long Documents
Ifan InDesign expert had a stand-up comedy routine in the Poconos, his bit about working on long documents might go something like this:Well, I just laid out a 500-page file … and boy, are my arms tired! (pause for laughter) No, seriously folks. You know, it's always a joy to work on a project like that. When I get a chance to work on a long pub, something with some meat on its bones, I'm like, Yes! An excuse to use the Book palette! Can't get enough of them InDesign palettes, am I right? Bring it on! (laughter)I remember once I had to do this really long document …(Audience: "How long WAS it?!")It was so long, I got a hernia moving the loaded text cursor! So I spend like 3 weeks laying it out. And I'm into it, right? There's fifty docs in the Book palette, I've got automatic page numbering going on, style sheets are synchronized so perfect I'm thinking this thing could win an award, you know? And then two days before the job's due at the printer, the client calls and says, "Hey, the footnotes aren't in the right place. They're supposed to be at the bottom of the pages, not at the end of the chapters. Also, I forgot to mention that I'll need an index. I circled every word that has to go in it…not too many, about 3 or 4 on each page. And while you're at it, could you be a pal and change every 'your' to 'their' and make it italic in every chapter."Oy. Take my client please!
