Chapter 8. Leaving the Nest: Printing, Prepress, and PDFs

If you keep your InDesign pages very basic, limiting yourself to "old school" (circa late-90s) fonts, image formats, and page layout features, then you're probably thinking, "What printing problems? Why is this chapter even here?"

And we'd agree basic InDesign functions shoot rock-solid PostScript to your desktop printer and PDFs to your desktop. Bang, zoom, there's your newsletter. But, is that why you bought InDesign? So you can add a couple CMYK colors, do a simple text wrap around a square-cut TIFF, and call it a day? We think not!

You're putting drop shadows over spot-colored text and exporting layouts directly to your hand-rolled PDF preset from the File menu. If there's a Blend Mode you haven't tried, by gum you're using it in the next project. Adobe wouldn't put these features in InDesign if they wouldn't print perfectly to every output device in existence, would they?

Well, okay, aside from a few kinks (which we'll cover as best as possible), Adobe has done a remarkable job in making sure that all the whiz-bang effects (and the more prosaic ones) make it through the printing and PDF process as intact and true to the design as possible. It is a feat of software engineering that a program capable of effects that not even the latest version of Postscript (Level 3) supports, namely transparency, can simulate the exact same look to older Postscript 2 printers, or even to inkjets, which don't speak PostScript at all!
