Chapter 1. Palettes and Menus and Windows, Oh My!

At some point in Michelangelo's career, before he painted the Sistine Chapel, he had to learn how to use brushes and oil paints, right? How to stretch a canvas, how to keep charcoal from getting all over everything. And surely, Jimi Hendrix stumbled for at least a few months (okay, days) while his fingers learned where to press on the strings to get the sound he wanted. Every artist has an interface they need to master before they can get down to creating.

With a program like InDesign, graphic designers are confronted with an interface that is daunting at best. Take the palettes. Have you ever counted how many there are in the program? 38! (That in itself can be a problem what are we, mission control specialists?)

With all the features in those palettes, not to mention all the tools and their variations, preferences, shortcuts, and page navigation methods everything that you could roll up into one big glob called an interface you'd think there can't possibly be any room for improvement.

Actually, we can think of quite a few things that need improving. Oh my, yes. This chapter will show you how to avoid interface challenges lying in wait, detour around the ones you can't avoid, and when possible, wreak havoc upon the rest, leaving you the victor, the Almighty King! (or Queen!) of InDesign. Bwaaa-ha-ha-ha!

Then you may return to your quiet pursuit of creative expression.
