Email is probably the most widely used application of the Internet. Today's popular email suites (e.g., Microsoft Outlook) integrate email with PIM applications such as calendar, to-do list, and address book, to further boost productivity. The email and PIM combo suites are the most common tools to access corporate information such as job assignments, collaboration tasks and directories of support personnel. Mobile devices with email and PIM capabilities (e.g., Blackberry handhelds) have been greeted with huge successes in the corporate world.

Because J2ME supports advanced network and rich UI features, it is the right platform for building cross-platform mobile email and PIM solutions. In this chapter, we first explore Mail4ME: an Open Source library for J2ME email clients. Then we discuss J2ME tools for PIM solutions on the mobile client side. Finally, we look at portal solutions that allow us to extend existing corporate email and PIM solutions to mobile devices.
