9.7 Summary
Although the SMS/MMS systems on mobile devices and the IM systems on desktop computers are largely incompatible today, new smart clients and open messaging servers have made it possible for the two worlds to converge and create a vast IM network accessible to any device and computer. In this chapter, we first introduced the J2ME Wireless Messaging API, which allows smart clients to access SMS/MMS messages. Then, we discussed how to extend Jabber-based desktop presence/IM systems to smart mobile devices. In both cases, we also discussed mobile messaging servers that enable desktop users to send and receive SMS/MMS or IM messages to and from mobile clients. We also introduced SIP-based mobile presence and IM systems, which are being standardized in the JCP. |
