Requirements for Using the Migration Assistant

The old Mac must:

  • Be running Mac OS X version 10.1 or above.

  • Have a built-in FireWire port.

  • Support "Target Disk Mode." Apple says that "most do."

You'll also need:

  • A standard FireWire cable long enough to reach between the two computers. Or move the computers so they can connect via the cable.

  • An Administrator name and password (unless you're doing this during the Tiger installation).

Be aware that:

  • This process will tie up both your Macs for hours!

  • This process will

not automatically migrate songs that you bought from the

iTunes Music Store. If you want to migrate

all of your songs, including those you bought at the Music Store, first deauthorize the old Mac:

    1.

    Open iTunes.

    2.

From the Advanced menu, choose "Deauthorize Computer…."

    3.

Click the button to "Deauthorize Computer for Music Store Account," then click OK.

    4.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 above if you want to also deauthorize any Audible content (books) to migrate over to the new machine. This second time, click the button to "Deauthorize Computer for Audible Account," then click OK.

    Be careful with your

iPod if iTunes on your new Mac has no music in it when you plug in your iPod, everything on your iPod will be erased to match your empty iTunes!
