Although you turn on VoiceOver in the Universal Access preferences, you also have a utility where you can customize so many aspects of this software. The VoiceOver Utility is in the Utilities folder, which is in the Applications folder. These options are fairly self-explanatory.
In the Verbosity pane, you can control how much your Mac talks to you. As you work with the program, you'll figure out how much you want it to tell you. For instance, you might decide you don't need to know if a word is in bold or italic (the text attributes).[View full size image]In the Navigation pane, you can control what gets highlighted and talked about and where VoiceOver focuses.Please see pages 390-391 for an explanation of the difference between the "VoiceOver cursor" and the "Keyboard focus," which will help you decide how you want them to track (follow each other). In the Voices pane, change the voice that speaks to you. You can also change how fast she or he speaks, the pitch, and the volume.In the Display pane, you can choose whether or not to display the VoiceOver cursor or the Caption Panel.As you can see, you can also determine how large the VoiceOver cursor appears, and you have some control over various aspects of the Caption Panel.In the Pronunciation pane, tell VoiceOver how you want different items to be pronounced.To change any of the existing pronunciations, double-click the word.To add more pronunciations, click the + sign and enter the words you need.
