Chapter Summary File, folder, and web resource management are all based on the fundamental keys of permissions and organization. You can manage two types of permissions when you share folders:- NTFS permissions Provide granular control for each file and folder as it pertains to each user and group. NTFS permissions are cumulative; however, a denied permission overrides a granted permission, and an explicit permission overrides an inherited permission.
- Share permissions Comprising three permissions that can be grantedFull Control, Change, and Read. These are less granular because they apply to only the shared folder and not individual contents.
When accessing a file or folder across a network, the most restrictive permissions always override. The Deny permission overrides everything. When sharing files and folders on an NTFS-formatted volume in Windows XP Professional, you can use compression to save space, create hidden administrative shares, cache folders for offline usage by client computers, and share files through IIS. |
