Creating remote rollovers

A remote rollover is the association of one slice with another one so that an action in one slice affects the visibility or effects in the other slice. In this exercise, you will create a remote rollover in which an effect occurs on one part of the screen (in the center image) when the Web site visitor rolls the mouse over a different part of the screen (over the Exhibits slice). In preparation for creating that rollover, you will first create the slice that will appear in the center of the screen when the mouse action occurs.

1.

In the Layers palette, select the Exhibit_info layer in the Info Panels layer set, and then click its visibility box. An eye icon () appears in the Layers palette, and the layer becomes visible in the image window. The layer contains a graphic that says "Spanish Masters" and provides the dates of the exhibit.

You will create a slice of that graphic from a selection.

2.

Choose Select > Load Selection > Exhibit_info Transparency.

An animated selection border appears around the layer contents.

3.

Choose Select > Create Slice from Selection.

A solid yellow border indicates that the layer is now also a slice, but the selection border is also visible.

4.

Choose Select > Deselect, or press Ctrl-D (Windows) or Command-D (Mac OS).

5.

In the Web Content palette, notice the appearance of your new slice, which was given a sequential number by default.

6.

Double-click the new slice name, type Exhibit Info, and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac OS) to rename it.

7.

In the Web Content palette, select Normal, and then click the eye icon () next to the Exhibit_info layer in the Layers palette to hide it.

Associating slices using the pickwick feature

When creating remote rollovers, it is not enough to change the visibility settings in the Layers palette for the remote slice. You must also create the relationship between the two slices. The pickwick () feature makes it easy and intuitive to accomplish this task.

1.

In the Web Content palette, expand the Exhibits slice so that you can see the Over rollover state identified with the slice. Then, click to select the rollover state.

2.

In the Layers palette, click the visibility box for the Exhibit_info layer. An eye icon () appears for that layer, and it becomes visible in the image window.

3.

In the Web Content palette, drag the pickwick () from the Over rollover state of the Exhibits slice to the Exhibit_info layer in the image window so that the slice boundary is highlighted by a dark border.

When you release the mouse button, notice the new remote trigger badge () in the symbol sets for the Exhibits slice in the image window. Also notice the remote target badge () for the Exhibit Info slice in the image window.

NoteInstead of dragging the pickwick to the target slice in the image window, you can drag it to that slice in the Web Content palette. The result is the same with either method.

4.

Select Normal in the Web Content palette, and click the arrow on the Exhibits slice to hide its associated rollover.

5.

In the Layers palette, click the arrow to collapse the Info Panels layer set.

If you accidentally release the pickwick over the wrong slice or decide later that you don't want to use the remote rollover, you can remove it. To do this, select the rollover state you want to edit, such as an Over or Down state nested under the triggering layer. Then click the remote target badge () for the target slice in the Web Content palette to delete it, which dissolves the remote rollover relationship.
