Adjusting an image and printing a proof

The next step in preparing an image for output is to make any color and tonal adjustments that are necessary. In this exercise, you'll add some tonal and color adjustments to correct an off-color scan of the original postcard.

So that you can compare the image before and after making corrections, you'll start by making a copy.

1.

Choose Image > Duplicate and click OK to duplicate the image.

2.

Arrange the two image windows in your workspace so that you can compare them as you work.

Now you'll adjust the hue and saturation of the image. There are various ways to adjust color, including using the Levels and Curves commands. You'll use the Hue/Saturation command.

3.

Select 16Start.tif (the original image) and choose Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.

4.

Drag the Hue/Saturation dialog box aside so that you can still see the 16Start.tif image, make sure the Preview box is checked, and then do following:

Drag the Hue slider until the colors, especially the flesh tones, look more natural. (We used +20.)

Drag the Saturation slider until the intensity of the colors looks normal (we used 17).

Leave the Lightness setting at the default value (0), and click OK.

NoteBefore going on to print this image, try toggling the gamut warning back on, and you should see that you have removed most of the out-of-gamut colors from the image.

5.

With 16Start.tif still selected, choose File > Print with Preview.

6.

In the Print with Preview dialog box, click the More Options button (in the upper right corner) if necessary to see all of the print options available. Then do the following:

Choose Color Management from the pop-up menu under the image preview.

In the Print area, click the Proof button to select your proof profile.

Under Options, choose Color Handling > Let Printer Determine Colors, and then choose Proof Setup Preset > Working CMYK.

(Optional) Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) to change the Done button to Remember, and click Remember to save these settings for the next time you print.

Click Print to print the image to a color printer, and compare it with the onscreen version.
