Strategies for Minimizing the Load on Your Processor

Certain features in GarageBand are more processor-intensive than others. Whether you are working with a dual-processor G5 or a slower computer, it's a good idea to be aware of the things that are the most processor-intensive so you can use them sparingly and thereby get the most out of your GarageBand experience.

The most processor-intensive tracks are

Software Instrument tracks

Real Instrument tracks using amp simulators

Tracks with a lot of effects

Also, remember that the more tracks you use in a song, the more demand on your processor.

If your processor is overloaded, try locking tracks and rendering them to the hard drive, muting or deleting some tracks in the song, or turning off some of the effects.

In the following exercises, you'll learn some additional techniques for monitoring and minimizing GarageBand's load on your computer's processor.
