Starting the Fedora Installation Procedure

Put the first installation CD (Disk 1) or DVD in the CD or DVD drive and turn on the power to your computer. The computer will boot from the CD and display the installation start screen. (If your machine doesn't boot from the CD, see Chapter 3.)

Press <Enter> to begin the graphical installation procedure. Fedora performs a few tasks, displaying its progress in a plain screen as shown in Figure 4-2. You don't need to respond to or understand the lines on the screen.

Before proceeding any further, Fedora provides an opportunity to test the installation CDs. It's not necessary to test them, but it's wise. If you are in the middle of the installation and a CD is unusable, it brings the installation to a halt. Figure 4-3 shows the CD test screen.

If you elect to test the CD, the media check continues for some time. When it is done, you see a screen like Figure 4-4.

The result screen displays PASS or FAIL. If your CD fails, try cleaning the CD or just testing it again. Sometimes a CD that fails on the first try is actually okay. Press <Enter> for OK and the screen in Figure 4-3 displays again, allowing you to test another CD (or the same one again). After you have tested all the CDs you need to test, select Skip to continue with the installation.

Fedora displays a few more lines. Then the welcome screen is displayed.

The Fedora installation procedure provides buttons on each screen to proceed to the Next screen, when ready, or go Back to the previous screen.
