Technology Solutions Associated with Storage Networking
There is no magic bullet when it comes to implementing a storage networking architecture. Moving from DAS to SAN requires restructuring your environment on a grand scale. At a fundamental level, there is resistance when putting another device in the data path between the host and the storage. In addition to cultural changes regarding support models, there are perceived issues and real issues with regard to performance that need to be addressed. In addition, physical requirements, such as cabling, are often ignored until the last minute, which can produce serious headaches when it is time for implementation and rollout. In summary, implementing a SAN means work. As pessimistic as this might sound, however, all is not lost. In addition to the financial ramifications of increasing the storage allocation efficiency, the reclamation of datacenter space, and the reduction of hardware maintenance bills through consolidation (all efforts that require more work), SANs do have intrinsic, tangible benefits.
