Chapter 5. Maximizing Storage Investments
The previous chapters demonstrated how to estimate and justify the financial impact of storage networking technologies in a firm. The deployment methodologies for staffing these projects and the overall support framework for managing storage networking products going forward are both crucial cost components. Ultimately, however, the true benefits of storage networking technologies are realized over the long run through decreased management and labor costs. Organizational changes and strategic planning carry these initiatives only so far. Fundamental process changes are also required to become a storage-centric business. Process change ensures the preservation and creation of value through fiscally responsible operations of storage environments.Over time, advances in server and software technologies play a larger role in the administration and management of storage environments and enable companies to achieve increased utilization and economies of scale. This chapter provides a brief overview of a handful of groundbreaking products designed to lower the cost associated with hosting IT solutions through optimization and virtualization of computing assets. This chapter also provides an overview of process changes required to manage storage costs after implementing a storage network. Special consideration is given to centralization, consolidation, and virtualization as guidelines for maintaining a flexible, robust, and easy-to-manage enterprise storage environment. This chapter also demonstrates how to manage storage costs within an Information Lifecycle Management framework.
