Executive Summary

The CTRC based in San Antonio, Texas is a non-profit organization dedicated to the practice of and advancement in cancer prevention research and cancer treatment. Since its inception 30 years ago, the CTRC has been a leader in cancer treatment and cancer research. The CTRC and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio together form the San Antonio Cancer Institute, a collaborative engagement between two world-class research and treatment facilities dedicated to providing top-notch cancer care.

The CTRC is a state-of-the-art treatment center that specializes in radiation oncology techniques, such as brachytherapy (an extremely precise method of targeting tumors with radiation), radiation therapy (X-rays), and chemotherapy (taking of chemicals orally or intravenously). The CTRC also offers diagnostic services as part of their Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging center.

In addition, as part of an overall expansion of facilities, the CTRC built the H-E-B Ambulatory Surgery Center in January, 2002, adding outpatient oncology surgery to their list of available treatment options.

In addition to offering compassionate, best-in-class healthcare, the CTRC provides a Wellness Center for ongoing and supplemental care. The Wellness Center at the CTRC provides complementary and alternative therapy resources for patients and their families, such as exercise facilities, nutritional counseling, and music and humor therapy. In addition, the Wellness Center offers Yoga, Tai Chi, guided imagery sessions, and other classes in stress management techniques.

Finally, the CTRC also sponsors the Institute for Drug Development (IDD), a non-profit organization whose primary aim is to develop drugs for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Although it is quite clearly a pioneer in cancer treatment, the CTRC is also a pioneer in the adoption of IP storage networks. The CTRC has built a networked storage infrastructure on iSCSI to increase the utilization and availability of its storage subsystems and to leverage an IP infrastructure to increase business continuance capabilities.

To store scanned data images for thousands of patients per year, and to make these images available for doctors and surgeons who must remain mobile at all times, the CTRC has chosen a networked storage infrastructure that relies on the capability of IP networks to provide data transfer over theoretically limitless distances.

To understand exactly why the CTRC architected their environment in this manner and to understand the business drivers behind the early adoption of iSCSI in the enterprise, it is essential to understand the host and storage environment at the CTRC, their workflow, and the nature of the applications they support.
