Capacity Planning and Utilization

For the most part, capacity planning is done as much by feel as by equation. Internally developed tools and spreadsheets play a significant role in the capacity planning process, as does the corporate knowledge embodied by the storage services team.

Like storage administrators and capacity planners at other companies, the storage services team at this firm has difficulty estimating space requirements and timelines for new projects and applications, especially when the application owners themselves are not sure of the details. Fortunately, as other companies with major consolidation initiatives are finding out, consolidation projects are easy to justify based on increasing disk drive capacity and decreasing storage costs. Unfortunately, even as allocation efficiency improves as a function of consolidation, storage demand remains unchecked and utilization efficiency remains poor.

The use of a leased acquisition model requires disk arrays to be returned to the vendor when the lease expires offering the firm an opportunity to upgrade to the newest storage platforms. The increases in storage density work in the customer's favor because they are now able to replace 10 3-TB raw capacity frames with two 20-TB raw capacity arrays for less money than they currently pay in maintenance. In addition, they can still provide a 10-TB cushion as a spare pool for new requirements.
