Picking a Search Range

Like QuarkXPress, InDesign can check the spelling of a word, a selection of text, your current story, or your current document. Unlike XPress, it can also search multiple selected stories and all of your stories in all open documents. It's not necessary to separately check your master pages, as you must do in XPress, since InDesign searches master pages whenever you search your document.

To select a word or a range of text, use the Type tool to make the selection. To select a story, either click within the story with the Type tool, or select the story's frame with the Selection tool (or one frame from a series of linked frames). To select multiple stories, Shift-select their frames with the Selection tool. To search one or more documents, make sure they're open.

After making your selection, choose Check Spelling from the Edit menu (or press Command-I/Ctrl-I). InDesign displays the Check Spelling dialog box (see Figure 41-1). Select the range to be checked in the Search popup menu: Selection, Story, Stories, To End of Story, Document, or All Documents.
