The Graphics Panel

The Graphics panel in the Print dialog box has choices similar to those found on the Options tab in QuarkXPress (see Figure 95-3). This panel controls how graphics are output (except for OPI workflows; see below), how fonts are sent to the printer, and the kind of data which is sent to the printer.

The Images option determines how the data in linked graphics is sent to the printer:

  • All. InDesign sends all the high-resolution data from the placed graphic. This is the default, and this should generally be chosen by service providers when sending to a high-resolution printer.

  • Optimized Subsampling. InDesign samples down the data in bitmap images based on the halftone screen and printer resolution (set in the Output panel). This prints much faster to printers when you're printing low- or medium-resolution proofs. This is the default setting in XPress.

  • Proxy. InDesign uses only the low-resolution screen preview data when printing graphics. This is even faster than Optimized Subsampling.

  • None. InDesign replaces all placed graphics with a large X. This prints the fastest of all, of course.

The Font section controls something not available in QuarkXPress: how fonts get downloaded to the printer. In the Download popup menu, Complete (the default) downloads all the document's fonts at the beginning of the print job. Subset downloads only the glyphs (characters) used in the document, but once per page (this is the same option available in Acrobat Distiller). None downloads only references to the fonts and should only be used if you know all the fonts reside on the printer. The Download PPD Fonts checkbox forces all the document's fonts to download, even if the printer's PPD says they are resident in the printer.

Finally, you may select the PostScript levelLevel 2 or 3which is compatible with your printer, though this is usually selected for you, depending on which printer you've chosen in the General panel. (Note that old PostScript Level 1 printers are not supported.) For Data Format, you may choose between Binary (more compact and faster) or ASCII (slower, but required by some older networks and printers).
