Editing Holes
When you want to edit the subpaths of a compound path, there are a few tricks which may help you:
- To work with a subpath or part of a subpath, use the Direct Selection tool
- There is a hidden tool, the Group Selection tool, which allows you to easily select an entire subpath. To select a subpath, first use the Direct Selection tool to click on its edge; you should see hollow anchor points. Then hold down Option/Alt key (you'll see a tiny plus sign beside the cursor) and click again, and the entire subpath is selected.
- Sometimes when you create a compound path, a hole may not open up. You aren't doing anything wrong; you just need to change the subpath's direction. (Holes are actually created by subpaths going in alternating directions. Unfortunately, InDesign never explicitly tells you the direction of a path; you just have to infer it from how the compound path acts.) To change the path's direction, select one anchor point on the subpath that is closed with the Direct Selection tool. Then choose Reverse Path from the Object menu. The hole will open up (or close up, if you're trying to get rid of a hole).
