  • Positioning the Rules

There are two attributes used when positioning a rule or rules in a paragraph: The vertical position (the "Offset") and the horizontal position.

    Vertical Position

QuarkXPress allows you to set the Offset using either absolute positioning (a specific value from the baseline) or with a percentage of the space between this paragraph and the one before or after it. InDesign, however, only allows absolute positioning. As in XPress, the offset for Rule Above is measured from the baseline of the top line of the text to bottom of the rule. The offset for Rule Below is measured from the baseline of the last line of text to the top of the rule.

Note that to make the reversed type heading in Figure 70-1, a

negative Offset value was used to begin the rule four points below the baseline. This is often done when you want to use the rule to create a reversed out effect or a tint background to the paragraph. XPress has strict limits as to how large the negative Offset can be; InDesign does notyou can even place the rule outside of the text frame!

    Horizontal Position

As in QuarkXPress, you may set a paragraph rule to be the width of the text or the columna choice you make in the Width popup menuand adjust that based on the Left and Right Indent values. However, the indents work a little differently in the two programs. In QuarkXPress, the column width is the width of the text (including any paragraph indents). In InDesign, the column is the column as defined by the text frame and the Text Inset value (from the Text Frame Options dialog box).

Both InDesign and XPress let you use negative values for the indents, but XPress never allows the rule to extend past the edge of the text box. In InDesign, you can push the rule out as far as you want (even bleeding off the page).
