  • Create Smart Albums

Creating albums and dragging photos into them is a great way to organize your photos, but it gets a lot better than that. iPhoto lets you create Smart Albums that automatically find and organize photos that match certain conditions you''ve set. For instance, you can create a Smart Album that contains only photos to which you''ve assigned a five-star rating (see the next page). iPhoto will place all five-star photos in the Smart Album.

A Smart Album can be identified in the "Source" pane by the "gear" icon on it, representing automation.

    To create a Smart Album

    1.

Click the Add button in the bottom-left corner of the iPhoto window, shown below.

    2.

In the sheet that drops down, choose "Smart Album," type a name for the new Smart Album, then click "Create."

    3.

A second sheet drops down that contains pop-up menus, as shown on the next page. Choose options from the pop-up menus to set the conditions that will identify photos for this Smart Album.

To add more conditions, click the plus button on the right side of the sheet.

To remove a condition, click its minus button.

This Smart Album will automatically collect photos that have a 5-star rating and that have been assigned the keyword "Kauai."

    4.

If you choose more than one condition, use the top pop-up menu to choose between "Match any of the following conditions" or "Match all of the following conditions."

    5.

Click OK. The new Smart Album appears in the "Source" pane as shown below, automatically adding photos that meet the conditions you set.

The new Smart Album icon is selected in the "Source" pane and the viewing area shows all photos in the Library that match the Smart Album conditions.

To edit a Smart Album''s settings

    1.

Select a Smart Album in the "Source" pane.

    2.

From the File menu choose "Edit Smart Album."

    3.

The Smart Album sheet drops down again (as shown at the top of the page). Make any changes you want, then click OK.
