Create Smart Albums
Creating albums and dragging photos into them is a great way to organize your photos, but it gets a lot better than that. iPhoto lets you create Smart Albums that automatically find and organize photos that match certain conditions you''ve set. For instance, you can create a Smart Album that contains only photos to which you''ve assigned a five-star rating (see the next page). iPhoto will place all five-star photos in the Smart Album.A Smart Album can be identified in the "Source" pane by the "gear" icon on it, representing automation.

To create a Smart Album
1. | Click the Add button in the bottom-left corner of the iPhoto window, shown below. |
2. | In the sheet that drops down, choose "Smart Album," type a name for the new Smart Album, then click "Create."[View full size image]![]() |
3. | A second sheet drops down that contains pop-up menus, as shown on the next page. Choose options from the pop-up menus to set the conditions that will identify photos for this Smart Album.To add more conditions, click the plus button on the right side of the sheet.To remove a condition, click its minus button.This Smart Album will automatically collect photos that have a 5-star rating and that have been assigned the keyword "Kauai."[View full size image]![]() |
4. | If you choose more than one condition, use the top pop-up menu to choose between "Match any of the following conditions" or "Match all of the following conditions." |
5. | Click OK. The new Smart Album appears in the "Source" pane as shown below, automatically adding photos that meet the conditions you set. |
The new Smart Album icon is selected in the "Source" pane and the viewing area shows all photos in the Library that match the Smart Album conditions.[View full size image]

To edit a Smart Album''s settings
1. | Select a Smart Album in the "Source" pane. |
2. | From the File menu choose "Edit Smart Album." |
3. | The Smart Album sheet drops down again (as shown at the top of the page). Make any changes you want, then click OK. |
