  • Set Up iChat

The first time you click the iChat icon in the Dock, a Welcome window opens. Click the "Continue" button to proceed to the next window where you enter information to set up a new iChat account (shown below). The "Account Type" pop-up menu lets you choose between using your .Mac account (if you have one) or an existing AOL Instant Messenger account (called AIM; go to www.aim.com
to get a free account; you don't have to subscribe to AOL to get a free AIM account).

    Note

You must be connected to the Internet to use iChat!

Bonjour does not require an Internet connection, just a local network.

If you don't have a .Mac account and you want one, you can click the "Get an iChat Account" button to sign up for it right now. Otherwise, enter your information, and click OK.

Your iChat buddy name (Account Name) is the same as your .Mac membership name (or your AIM buddy name). Your online buddies will use that name to find you and send Instant Messages or files. You can even have both an AOL Instant Messenger buddy name and your Mac.com
buddy name and switch between them (only one can be active at a time).

After you enter the information to set up a new iChat account (above-left), click "Continue." The next window lets you set up Jabber Instant Messaging if you have a Jabber account registered to a Jabber server. Enter your account name and password, then click "Continue." The next window opens to ask if you want to use Bonjour messaging (above-right). If you have two or more computers connected to each other on a local network, choose "Use Bonjour Messaging" to make sharing files (or network chatting) easy and convenient. Click "Continue" and one last screen opens. Just click "Done" and start using iChat and Bonjour.

If you're in a public space, such as an Internet cafe, you should quit iChat and turn off Bonjour when you're not using it to ensure privacy and security. Bonjour can be turned off (or on) in the Accounts pane of iChat Preferences.
