Legacy Voice and Data Networks
The term "legacy" refers to networks that have two separate infrastructures to support voice and data network services. A significant portion of many companies' IT budget goes toward maintaining the distinct voice and data networks, which requires one staff dedicated to maintaining the legacy voice infrastructure, including PBXs and voice-mail systems, and another staff dedicated to supporting the data network infrastructure. Two other drawbacks associated with this approach is that these two separate infrastructures cannot share their resources with each other and have to be managed separately, both of which increase IT budgets. Figure 1-1 shows a common example of an enterprise that has separate data and voice networks.
