Creating Duotones
Color Plate 35-2
As discussed in Technique 35, duotones use specified ink colors to print images. An image that uses one color to print is a monotone. When two inks are used, the print is a duotone. With three inks, it’s a tritone, and four inks make it a quadtone.I started with a grayscale image of stone arches. The first monotone I created used blue as the ink (top left). Then I added black as the second ink, creating a duotone (top right). Notice how the addition of black adds depth and shading.I created the next monotone I created with brown (middle left). Then, I added orange to create a duotone (middle right). From there, I progressed to a tritone when I added violet to the ink mix (bottom left). Finally, I added green to create a quadtone (bottom right). It’s really interesting to see how the colors mix and what the results are.
