PLAN STRATEGIES

These are strategies relating to how the plan itself is structured. Strategies include the chain of command for the recovery, staffing of the recovery teams, how often to test the plan, and how will the plan be maintained.

The chain of command for the recovery should mirror the hierarchy of the healthcare organization. If this is not done, once the plan is executed, the actual chain of command could take over the recovery and the plan may ultimately be deemed unusable. This point may seem minor, but it can be one of the most important and difficult components in recovery planning. This is the point at which the planner will get "buy-in" from the management structure of the healthcare organization. To accomplish this, it is essential that the entire program have the support of the Chief Executive.

Staff selection of the teams should be left to team leaders, and team leaders should be chosen relative to their position on the healthcare organizational hierarchy and their area of expertise. The Chief Information Officer, for instance, would be the ideal candidate for the leader of the Information Systems recovery team.

Testing and maintenance of the plan should be conducted at least once a year.
