Backdoors
Backdoor programs are designed to hide inside a target host. The backdoor allows the user that installed it to access the system without using normal authorization or vulnerability exploitation.
Backup Generator
An independent source of power, usually fueled by diesel or natural gas.

The Balanced Budget Act of 1997.
BBRA
The Balanced Budget Refinement Act of 1999.
BCP (Business Continuity Planning)
An all encompassing "umbrella" term covering both disaster recovery planning and business resumption planning.
BIA (Business Impact Analysis)
The process of identifying the business processes critical to the profitability and survival of the healthcare organization's operations. The results of the analysis are an identification of the functioning of each business unit; the establishment of an RTO for each business function; the establishment of a recovery sequence ordering; and, an identification of resources to be recovered.
Biometric Identifier
An identifier based on some physical characteristic, such as a fingerprint.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA)
An association that represents the common interests of Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans. The BCBSA serves as the administrator for the Health Care Code Maintenance Committee and also helps maintain the HCPCS Level II codes.
Business Associate (BA)
A person or healthcare organization that performs a function or activity on behalf of a covered entity, but is not part of the covered entity's workforce. A business associate can also be a covered.
Business Continuity Planning (BCP)
Process of developing advance arrangements and procedures that enable a healthcare organization to respond to an event in such a manner that critical business functions continue with planned levels of interruption or essential change.
Business Function
A logical group of business processes that consist of procedures and/or tasks having the end goal of meeting a business need.
Business Interruption Insurance
Insurance coverage for disaster related expenses that may be incurred until operations are fully recovered after a disaster.
Business Model
A model of a business healthcare organization or process.
Business Process
A set of tasks and/or procedures which accept a specific work input and generate a specific work output.
Business Relationships
The term agent is often used to describe a person or healthcare organization that assumes some of the responsibilities of another one. This term has been avoided in the final rules so that a more HIPAA-specific meaning could be used for business associate. The term business partner (BP) was originally used for business associate.
